Summer Plans

I'm glad to report that our plans for traveling to Washington, D.C. this summer are coming together. Five of our members will be arriving in Washington, D.C. on July 21st. While at the convention, the UTC five will participate in a rally on the steps of the U.S. Capitol and attend caucus meetings - shaping the future of the College Democrats of America. We will have the opportunity to hear many prominent progressive and Democratic figures speak. Most importantly, we will be attending trainings hosted by Democratic G.A.I.N., which is a democratic organization that trains individuals to work and strategize on the campaign trial. Trough this training, our members will be able to return to UTC with the ability to mobilize our chapter and help the county Party and local candidates in 2006 and beyond. We appreciate all the support given to us from the community. Look for updates during our time in Washington, D.C., as we will be updating you on the convention as it unfolds.

Coming Together

All across Tennessee, College Democrats are coming together, unifying like never before. The UTC College Democrats have now joined in this movement. What is happening to Democrats on the college level is part of something much larger. In the short time Howard Dean has been Chairman of the Party, our wounds have already began to heal. On a national scale the Party has direction. Dean brings to the table a "50 state strategy"; this is something we are already beginning to feel. Take the recent Hamilton County Democratic Party Reorganization as an example. What was a crippled, ineffective group, is now something to be be proud of and support. We have competent, progressive and visioinary local leadership. Let us hope that this is only a drop in the bucket, the first drop in the bucket.

This summer we have an opportunity to congregate with College Democrats from across the country in our nation's capitol. It is important we have a strong showing in order to let the people know Tennesse is on its way to becoming a "blue state" once more. It will take time; it will be "hard work". We must do this together, as a united Democratic Party, starting from the ground up.
